Below are some examples of different applications of flagstone.

Flagstone can be added to a project to add the natural feel that you can only get when using stone.  There are two options when it comes to shape.  Ashlar (rectangular) and Irregular.  The garden or patio area will dictate the best choice in shape and scale.  The main thing to be concerned with when choosing a type of flagstone, is the size and density of the stone.  Stones that are too small will not stay in place over the years being affected by the freeze/thaw cycle in Michigan.  The other thing to be aware of is the density of the stone.  Stone that is too porous will retain water.  This can cause many problems.  If the stone is in a shady area, it can become very slippery from algae that will grow on the surface.  If the stone is porous enough and holds the water into the winter-time, it can break from the water freezing inside of it.  However, there are options when picking a type of stone.  The projects below have been completed using Bluestone.  This type of stone as well as certain other types of flagstone, can produce a durable, safe walking and sitting area for years to come.

Ashlar-cut (rectangular-cut) flagstone can add a formal look with a natural feel.

Irregular-cut can provide a natural feel and a very durable patio or walkway surface.
